Tips for tourists to avoid shady hotels

Myrtle Beach is a popular destination for numerous tourists each year. In 2016, some estimates held that nearly 18 million tourists visited Myrtle Beach in the summer, and anyone planning on vacationing there can rightfully expect to have a great time.

However, people also need to do their due diligence to avoid an injury or something worse. There are many fantastic hotels in the area, but there are also many unreputable ones. Some hotels may even be hot spots for drug users and prostitutes. Each year, many tourists book rooms at such hotels because they do not know better. Here are some tips for staying safe and avoiding such a situation.

Check online reviews

In the digital age, there are plenty of resources for finding out a hotel's reputation. Sites such as Yelp are great for discovering pertinent information. Before booking a hotel, tourists should go to a review site to see what past visitors have to say. You should always expect to see a few bad reviews no matter how good the establishment is, but keep an eye out for reviews that hint at drug use or other unsavory activities.

Look at the website

Any hotel that values its reputation will have a good website. If you go to a hotel's website and it is uninformative or difficult to navigate, you ought to look elsewhere. Be cautious of websites that look like they were put together hastily.

Leave bad situations

When all else fails, you should cut your losses if you arrive at the hotel and do not feel safe. If the hotel looks dirty or unmaintained when you arrive, those are warning signs. It is called the hospitality industry for a reason; you should always feel welcome when you check in to a hotel. It is much better to take the loss and not get your money back than risk injury. Find another place where you can be more confident of your safety.
